Check with your insurer

The first step would be to actually contact your insurance provider and check if you are eligible to make a claim or if a claim is necessary. Also, check your policy with them and see what is covered, this will give you an idea of what you will need to make a claim, such as receipts or evidence so the claim can go through. Checking with your insurer will also confirm if there are specific procedures you need to go through to make sure you claim correctly such as if you have to use a plumber used by them for example should you have a burst pipe or anything in your home.

Make sure you have all your facts and details organized

The difference between a claim going through and being rejected can be minor so making sure everything is watertight is highly recommended to make sure there are no snags when making a claim. Things to make sure you keep are receipts for things you have insured, any pictures of products to prove not already damaged, evidence of the damage, and any information provided by the third party that may be involved in the claim.

Making sure you have all the information required will help you make the claim and also give you the best chance at it being successful. This is also very important if someone is making a claim against you, as anything they say unless you prove it wrong you could be liable for so if you have evidence on the contrary then you can actually keep the impact as little as possible.

Get help

If you feel like you are unsure when doing a claim or not that confident you have what you need then getting some outside help to advise you can help. You can use an insurance claims adjuster or a lawyer/solicitor and they will be able to go through your policy and the information you have and help put the case together and make sure you have the best chance of the claim going through. This can come at a cost though so it isn’t always the best route, but for high expense claims it may be worth it to get back the money you deserve.

If you are unfortunately going through a claim or are just looking for information for future claims the hopefully, these tips will help you with your claim and understanding what you need to do when submitting one.
