What To Consider When Hiring People

When you have your own business, there might come a time when you have to invest in some staff and get people on board with your company. But, what should you consider when you are hiring people? Here are some things to think about.

What do they look like?

This is a tricky one and you might need to be mindful of how people look. If you have a customer-facing role, it might be tempting to lay down some rules where tattoos and piercings are concerned. Just remember, you can’t throw someone’s application out because of how they look. If you are working away from the public, there is no reason to consider what someone looks like. So of the most talented people have a collection of tattoos and body piercings, so don’t rule someone out because of how they look. Also, this is illegal. If they have face piercings and you work with food, they will need to cover them but this doesn’t rule them out as a potential employee.

What are their qualifications?

It can be hard to check and see if people have the qualifications that they claim to have. Over the years, it has been common practice to lie about stuff on your CV. And while someone might be able to do a job because of experience, it can be terrible to discover that they aren’t actually qualified. Using bs7858 screening, you can perform checks to see if the person that you are hiring is the person that they claim to be. This is important if you are dealing with high security or vulnerable people. Don’t be afraid to check things out, especially if their CV looks too good to be true.

Do they want to be there?

It is true, that there are some jobs that people take on as they want a paycheque. And, while there is nothing wrong with that, it can be frustrating if this is your business. Of course, you want people who are as passionate as you are! There might be people applying because it is just a job but there will be people who will be excited to work for you. This excitement will ensure that they get out of bed every morning and get to work. They will also be less likely to take sick days when they can’t be bothered to come in. Make sure that the people you hire will be supportive by wanting to be there.

What do they bring with them?

Every person that you hire will have a collection of skills that they can bring to the table. This might be that their hobbies are useful to your creative process or they make a mean cupcake for the Fridays snack table. It is important to look at the overall person as their hobbies might bring more to the company than their qualifications. Things such as age, experience, their family, all of this can shape them as an employee. And don’t be afraid to ask them to flex these skills as they might be useful.
