When we have a goal, we feel motivated and full of energy, we are willing to go the extra mile. Some goals like going to college, or saving to buy a house, can keep us motivated for years.
Although goals don’t necessarily have to match a calendar year, you can start a new goal practically at any time; many people, including me, enjoying the exercise of starting a new goal at the beginning of the year. That’s why my gyms are full the first few weeks of January and February, many people set to goal to get in better shape.
For 2024, my big goal is to create a monthly networking events. These events will occur once a month, specifically on the last Sunday of each month.
The value proposition behind these events is to bring in speakers, authors, and leaders who can inspire us to become better individuals personally and in business. My personal objective is to build a community of like-minded individuals and to be exposed to people who can motivate and inspire not only me but also the community I am organizing.
I am doing it because I have some organizational skills, some marketing skills, and I love to be surrounded by people who inspire me. This is the overlapping part where the things that I like, and the opportunity to create a business overlap.
I will seize this opportunity to discuss the process of setting goals for yourself, your team, employees, or organization.
How to set a new goal
One of my good friends once said to me: “my goal is to have a goal.” I responded by being patient and supportive. Eventually she found her goals.
Most goals are established because we see someone we admire and wish to emulate, we desire some object (a new car) or we seek prestige and recognition.
There are material goals and personal goals.
Example of material goals are:
- I would like to own a house by the river
- I would like to have a fancy car.
Examples of personal goals include:
- I aspire to become a public speaker.
- I aim to run a marathon
- I hope to earn a college degree.
The most effective way to formulate a goal is to expose oneself to diverse individuals, such as athletes, intellectuals, entrepreneurs, artists, and allow your curiosity to guide you. Hopefully their successes will inspire you to try to emulate some of them.
How I became an event organizer
I chose to become an event organizer due to my experience as a photographer, which exposed me to numerous events. After attending several events, I began to conceive ideas for improvements, which I kept in my subconscious.
One day, while conversing with the owner of Limoo Cafe, he expressed his interest in finding ways to attract more people to his café. It dawned on me that his café was ideal for hosting networking events. The very next day, I created a Facebook Group called Solopreneur Montreal and a corresponding Facebook event. I extended invitations to most of my Facebook friends, and that’s how the event was born.
And you?
