Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok spend millions of dollars trying to figure out what’s in the mind of teenage girls. I was curious too, so I asked the daughters of a friend of mine (Lin) and I had the opportunity to speak with Raina (15 years old) and Thalia (17 years old).
Thalia and Raina are two sisters who live in Montreal. They are perfectly bilingual, they switch from English to French almost unconsciously, they have been bilingual since elementary school.
School: For Thalia, her favorite class is English and for Raina, her favorite class is French. They both feel comfortable with language classes. Thalia doesn’t like math.
Activities: Pre-Covid, Thalia use to do hip-hop and play basketball after school. Raina is less into sports, she prefers to come back home and cook or bake something.
Netflix: Both girls watch about 2 to 3 hours of Netflix per day.
Social media: Both girls prefer TikTok to any other social media. They enjoy how the algorithm gives them videos they like to watch. They watch mostly dancing videos or humorous videos. Raina easily spends five hours on TikTok while Thalia spends about two hours.
Range of interests: They feel that as girls, they have a broader range of interest than guys.
Friendship: Friendship among girls is more about sharing emotions, while friendship among guys is more competitive.
Dating: It’s OK for a girl to ask a guy for a date, but girls still prefer to be asked out.
Body image: They don’t feel too much pressure in regards to keeping a perfect body and being beautiful. They think the tide is changing and people are becoming more accepting of people’s different body sizes and shapes.
Activism: In regards to activism, for both girls feel very strong in favor of equal rights. “The standard for guys is so much lower.”Also, they are against racism and are concerned about the environment.
Life in times of Covid: They both miss spending time with their friends.
About the future: They don’t feel too optimist about the future. There are so many unresolved issues right now, they feel that over time, instead of solving them, we will have an accumulation of even more issues to resolve.
