Whether you’re about to climb behind the wheel of your car or board an international flight, there are important safety tips for the business traveler that you should take a look at first.
Business travel can be exciting and it can also be hectic – from juggling meetings to attending training sessions, you’ll definitely have your hands full. However, you should prioritize your safety above all else.
Here’s how.
5 Safety Tips for the Business Traveler
Keep these travel safety tips in mind to make sure your trips go as smoothly as possible.
1. Sharing is Caring
Before you leave for your trip, make sure you share all details of your trip with a few family members or friends. That way, they’ll have an idea of where you are supposed to be at all times during your travels.
Share with them your contact information, too, if it will be different while you’re traveling (such as if you’re traveling abroad and need to use a corporate messaging option.)
Take photos of all of your important travel documents, like your visa or passport. Give a copy to a family member and coworker in case of an emergency. Getting travel insurance for your trip isn’t a bad idea, either.
2. Pack Wisely
You know to pack the business suit and dress shoes – but be judicious when deciding on optional items to bring. Leave your expensive accessories, like any heirloom jewelry or designer clothing, at home. Use professional-looking substitutes that look nice, but aren’t nearly as valuable.
You may want to research the customs of the area you are traveling to if it’s quite a ways from home. In certain cultures, different fashions might be viewed as disrespectful (this goes for both genders). Pack conservative outfits and dress like a local whenever you can.
3. Know the Basics
On that note, take the time to familiarize yourself with the other customs and cultures of your destination before you go. Offending someone, whether deliberately or accidentally, can jeopardize your safety.
While you’re traveling and just before, keep an eye on the news and weather forecast. When you arrive at the hotel, familiarize yourself with the closest hospital and police station. Know how to get in touch with emergency services if you must.
4. Vehicle Safety
If you’re using a rental car, consider using the hotel’s valet parking service. That way, you’ll be able to get back to your car in a well-lit, populated area rather than trying to find your car in a dark parking garage. Research local roads and what to do in the event of a motor vehicle accident, too.
If you’re using public transportation, select a reputable service and book any transportation in advance. Confirm the driver’s name and note the license plate before you get into the vehicle.
5. Plan Ahead
If you can, print out maps before you go. This is especially important if you will be driving but even if you’re not, having maps of local roads and services is vital. Don’t rely on your cell phone for this – you never know when you might lose service.
Stay Safe While Traveling
While you’re traveling, keep your luggage with you at all times, especially at the airport. Don’t explore the host city at nightstick to daytime hours for any adventure!
And finally, consider carrying back-ups of essential items. You may want to bring an external backup battery for your phone along with other safety gear just in case.
Whether you’re headed to another city a few hours away or jumping on a plane to fly halfway around the world, it’s important that you keep your safety front and center at all times.
