President Trump has finally decided to take action against the Houthi rebels in Yemen. For those who might not be familiar, the Houthis are a group based in Yemen, backed by Iran, and they’ve been causing quite a stir lately.
Since November 2023, these rebels have targeted numerous merchant vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden using missiles, drones, and explosive-laden speedboats. This has severely disrupted global trade, especially through the Red Sea—a crucial artery where nearly 15% of the world’s seaborne trade passes. Major shipping companies have even had to reroute their ships around southern Africa to avoid the chaos, adding significant time and cost to their journeys.
In response, President Trump authorized large-scale military strikes this past Saturday, targeting Houthi-controlled sites in Yemen. The aim? To neutralize their radars, missile systems, and drone facilities, thereby ensuring the safety of international shipping lanes. This move also sends a clear message to Iran about the U.S.’s stance on regional security.
In his own words on Truth Social, President Trump stated:
“Today, I have ordered the United States Military to launch decisive and powerful Military action against the Houthi terrorists in Yemen. They have waged an unrelenting campaign of piracy, violence, and terrorism against American, and other, ships, aircraft, and drones.”
It’s worth noting that while previous administrations attempted to address the Houthi threat, this marks one of the most significant military actions taken against them to date. The situation remains fluid, and it’s uncertain how the Houthis or their backers in Tehran will respond.
