Hi, today I am answering a question from a YouTube subscriber. If you have a question about any of the topics I cover on my channel, please send a voicemail or, better yet, a video file to the email address on my YouTube channel, and I’ll do my best to answer it.
Here is Lola from Spain.
“Hi, my name is Lola from Spain. How do I show up as a woman in a male dominated industry? I am struggling with this.”
Hello Lola, thank you for your question.
The first thing you need to do is change your mindset. Instead of focusing on how difficult it is to operate in a male-dominated field—whether it’s finance, engineering, or programming—think about how special you are to break through the gender stereotype and find yourself in the position where you are.
You have a unique opportunity because you’re different from everyone else. If you’re just as good as everyone else—not necessarily better, but just as good—you’ll stand out so much more than all of the Johns, James, or Roberts. You are Lola, a woman in a sea of men, and your opinion counts even more because you can see problems and solve problems from the unique perspective of a woman.
What if the thing you see as your biggest weakness, the thing that makes you feel less-than or excluded, is actually your greatest power? If you flip your mindset around that, think about how much opportunity you could attract. You’d be far more interesting to successful and influential people than all the men around you.
Do you think others would rather spend time with someone who sees themselves as a victim of circumstances, or would they rather spend time with someone who sees themselves as a trailblazer, breaking gender stereotypes and seeing the world as full of opportunities?
The truth, Lola, is that business is hard. People will try to keep you out because of their own fears and insecurities. You might be judged based on your gender, nationality, or skin color, but don’t let that deter you. Instead, own who you are and watch what happens.
Working in a male-dominated field can present unique challenges for women, but there are several strategies that can help overcome these obstacles and thrive in such environments:
1. Build Confidence and Assertiveness
- Self-Belief: Cultivate strong self-confidence in your skills and knowledge. Believe in your ability to succeed and contribute meaningfully.
- Speak Up: Don’t hesitate to voice your opinions, ideas, and concerns. Assertiveness is key to being heard and respected.
2. Develop Expertise and Stay Informed
- Continuous Learning: Stay updated with the latest trends, technologies, and developments in your field. This not only enhances your expertise but also reinforces your credibility.
- Seek Certifications: Consider pursuing certifications or advanced degrees that can set you apart and demonstrate your commitment to the profession.
3. Network and Find Mentorship
- Build Relationships: Cultivate a strong professional network, both within and outside your organization. Networking can provide support, open doors, and offer new opportunities.
- Find Mentors: Seek out mentors, both male and female, who can offer guidance, share their experiences, and advocate for you.
4. Challenge Gender Stereotypes
- Break Stereotypes: Be aware of gender stereotypes and work actively to challenge them by excelling in your role and encouraging others to do the same.
- Support Other Women: Promote and support other women in your field, helping to build a more inclusive environment.
5. Develop Strong Communication Skills
- Effective Communication: Work on clear and effective communication, both written and verbal. Good communication is crucial in establishing your ideas and leadership.
- Negotiation Skills: Learn to negotiate effectively, whether it’s for salary, promotions, or resources, to ensure you receive the recognition and compensation you deserve.
6. Cultivate Resilience
- Embrace Challenges: View challenges as opportunities for growth. Learn from setbacks and use them as motivation to improve and succeed.
- Stay Persistent: Persistence is key. Keep pushing forward, even in the face of adversity, and don’t let challenges deter you from your goals.
7. Seek a Supportive Work Environment
- Advocate for Change: If your workplace has issues with gender bias, advocate for policies and practices that promote diversity and inclusion.
- Choose the Right Employer: Whenever possible, seek out companies or teams that value diversity and are committed to supporting women in the workplace.
8. Maintain Work-Life Balance
- Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries to maintain a healthy work-life balance. This is crucial for long-term success and well-being.
- Prioritize Self-Care: Take care of your physical and mental health. Self-care is essential for sustaining energy and focus in a challenging work environment.
By adopting these strategies, women can not only overcome the challenges of working in male-dominated fields but also excel and lead, paving the way for future generations.
