How to choose a digital marketing agency

Digital marketing is essential in today’s climate. Consumers love being online, and using various digital platforms is the best way to reach them. Unfortunately, that is not as easy as it sounds. Utilizing different digital channels can be pretty tricky, but that’s okay; there are plenty of helpful resources out there. However, as there are so many different branches of digital marketing, even with so many resources available, the idea of having to read them all can be quite overwhelming. That’s why digital marketing agencies are there to help. Digital marketing agencies like Itonic are made up of varying professionals, all with different skills. When a business approaches an agency, they will be able to put the right person on the job and help a business achieve its goals.

Thankfully, there are plenty of agencies out there that a business can choose from, but what should the selection process look like? What needs to be considered when choosing an agency?

Do they have any recommendations or reviews?

One of the first things you’ll want to look for when choosing a digital agency is if they have any reviews. They may have some on their website or you may want to seek out independent reviews for a better picture of the agency. Reviews and recommendations are a great way to determine if an agency does what they say they do. The more reviews you can find, the better as you can then begin to see if there is a pattern of happy or unhappy customers. On occasion, you may find a few anomaly reviews, but it’s often best to go with the general consensus. This way, you will be able to find the right agency to meet your needs.

Do they have a portfolio available?

A digital marketing agency should always be able to show you some of their past work. There will be occasions where agencies have signed NDA agreements with brands, so they will not be able to show you everything, but you should be able to see some of their work, even if it’s just mock-ups of what they have previously. If an agency cannot provide any examples, they may not be up for the job. Many agencies will have a portfolio or examples on their web page, so weeding out the less compatible candidates should be pretty straightforward. Additionally, a portfolio is a great way to see if an agency can meet your needs. If they have previously worked on campaigns similar to what you need, then you can determine if they’re a good fit.

What are the KPIs? What promises are made?

Key performance indicators (KPIs) are what an agency strives for. They are goals that have been set to keep the agency on track. If you get a chance to speak to an agency, ask them about their KPIs and see if they achieve the goals they have set for themselves. This can tell you a lot about an agency and if they’re motivated.

Secondly, consider what an agency is promising you. If an agency can tell you that they will undoubtedly create an excellent marketing campaign for you that will reach a million consumers, they’re likely not telling the truth. Nothing is for sure in digital marketing, and more often than not, even the smallest of successes can take a long time to achieve. On the other hand, if an agency cannot promise you anything, not even some basic improvements, they are not the right agency to work with. Promises should be realistic, measurable and attainable!

What do they charge?

One of the most important factors when choosing to work with an agency is the cost. The cost of services will vary depending on the services needed, tools used, and marketers’ expertise. To determine you’re getting the best value for money, speak to several agencies and get quotes for what you require. You can then compare the quotes and find an agency that fits your budget. It’s important to note that different services will cost different amounts. For example, if you need an agency to build you a website, the cost of that may vary from if you just need a social media campaign being run.

Remember, if you believe a price is too good to be true, then it likely is!
