Contractor Renovation Challenges Modern Construction Faces

There’s no end to the list of modern contractor renovation challenges you can face as a construction business. Yet, there are some that take priority during any project. From the costs of materials to delays on pretty much anything, here are some of the most common today.

Construction Health and Safety

Above anything else, even before pleasing a client, health, and safety is the number one priority in any construction project. Renovation can be hazardous and poses many dangers. These are escalated when you complete projects near public spaces, but danger lurks around every corner. From using a debris chute to proper training, nothing is off the table. All employees must be aware of the necessary procedures, and all sites must be secured as best as possible.

Rising Costs of Materials

Everything has risen sharply in price over the past few years. In the years since the pandemic, we have been hit by further global issues with a knock-on effect, such as regional wars and poor economies. As such, the construction industry has been one of the hardest hit as clients can’t afford the inevitable cost increase, and contractors struggle to keep up with supplier demands. To counteract this, marginal adjustments for inflation and cost increases should be included.

Finding the right workers is one of the biggest challenges in any sector. Yet, it is tough in the building industry, and made worse by external influence. For example, the number of EU-born construction workers has decreased by 40% in the UK because of factors such as Brexit. This makes staffing much more complex in terms of time consumption and growing costs.

Logistics and planning are a large part of any construction project. Yet even the best laid plans can go wrong. In construction and renovation projects, many things can get in the way of a project. One of the most frustrating is delays to materials, staffing issues because of red tape  and of course, the weather. As disappointing as this can be for a contractor, clients often don’t understand why. It is best to explain the reasons why and work with them on a solution.

Going Over Budget Limits

Deep pockets go a long way, but there is always a constraint when it comes to financing a project. Clients must be fully informed of costs, and how they can increase. The end price of a construction project can increase due to inflation, sourcing from alternative suppliers and last-minute changes. It is recommended that a project has a margin of between 10% and 20% of the projected overall costs to relieve any financial pressure and pay for unforeseen extra costs.
