My two girlfriends got pregnant in the same month. One decided to have an abortion and the other didn’t.
I was just 18 years old. My life at that time was a mess, it revolved around sex, drugs, and alcohol. I am not proud of who I was. I have repented many times and have changed my ways, but I can’t change the past.
Today I am the happy and proud father of a gorgeous daughter and the grandfather of a handsome grandson. I am so glad that the mother of my daughter decided to have her.
On the other hand, my other girlfriend was not ready to have a child and she did what was best for her. She had an abortion.
Abortion in Latin America
In many countries in Latin America, abortion is a high crime.
In countries such as Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Suriname, and Guyana abortions are illegal even in cases of rape, punishable with up to years in prison.
Abortion and income inequality
Of course, this is one more scenario where income inequality shows it’s ugly head.
Women who have money get a discrete private service, where the abortion is kept secret, the doctor is well paid, and no one knows any better.
On the other hand, women who can not afford a discrete and expensive doctor, try to perform the abortions themselves or try to get the help from someone with less experience, making the abortion process unsafe and it could cost the women’s life.
Bans don’t prevent abortions
According to a study published in The Economist, the percentage of abortion is higher in countries where it’s illegal than in countries where it’s legal.
Abortion rate where abortion is illegal: 32 per every 1,000 women.
Abortion rate where abortion is legal: 17 per every 1,000 women.
These statistics prove that abortion ban don’t work.
Abortion is legal in Canada, The USA, most of Europe, Russia, China, and Australia. And illegal in various degrees in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and India.
Abortion just became legal in Argentina
Argentina is the most populous country in Latin America to legalize abortion. On December 30, 2020, the Senate legalized abortion. Previously abortion was only permitted in case of rape in a case where the mother’s life was in danger.
It’s said that as the church loses influence in Latin America there will be a wave of abortion legalization throughout the rest of Latin America.
